A serious, dutiful man who was never very good at being cheerful or open. He may seem placid on the surface, but there's a riptide under there.
Upon first meeting him, you may think Aoshi doesn't care about you. You're probably right: he was raised to be intelligent, ruthless, and effective in the service of the Shogun. In the bargain, he grew up without much ability to value people outside his clan, and is generally unwilling to show emotion.
But if you're one of the few people Aoshi cares about? He will do anything in the world for you. Losing you might drive him a little mad. And while you're around, all that ruthlessness and effectiveness will be turned toward merging your goals with his own... and achieving them.
Aoshi was born into an onmitsu clan; the Oniwabanshuu served the Shogun as his intelligence gatherers for three centuries, until the Shogunate's collapse. According to Jinchuu, his hearing was trained to be extra sensitive in his infancy, leaving him with hearing sensitive enough to listen to heartbeats. He was trained in the family style of hand-to-hand combat and is a martial arts prodigy, re-developing a dual-wielding kodachi style and making it his own.
